THE DEPARTMENT OF COINS & MEDALS
Under the direction of Andrea Pancotti, the department deals with collection coins and medals from the earliest items to those produced in modern times. Specialising in Greek coins, Roman coins, Byzantine coins, medieval and Modern coins.
The department is concerned with the study, cataloguing, valuation and placement of coins and medals on account for sale at auction and private sale in the Italian and international markets. Private sale is the preferred channel for high value items of particular historical and artistic importance.
The department offers – in collaboration with the department of Ingegneria Chimica Materiali Ambiente (Chemical Engineering) – the valuation of numismatic objects of interest, including an analysis and scientific
– technical consultancy service employing the latest examination techniques and equipment (computer assisted microscopy techniques using images obtained by electronic and optic microscopy; examination techniques based on µXRF (X-Ray Fluorescence); examination techiques based on Hyper Spectral Imaging (HSI) relating to spectral interval 400-2500 nm.; innovative chemiometric techniques for information management.
Andrea Pancotti, an archeologist specialised in the topography of ancient Italy, is member of the Accademia Italiana di Studi Numismatici, and also member of the “Bollettino dell’Unione Storia ed Arte” editorial committee. He is also the author of numerous scientific publications in the historical and archeological field.
